I teach math at Art of Problem Solving Academy in San Mateo, and I work there because I believe in the way AoPS teaches. Students learn to sit with a difficult problem, try ideas, learn from mistakes, and understand why a solution works. Those habits matter beyond math.
AoPS classes are excellent, but I understand that they are expensive and may not be affordable for every family. That is why I recommend Alcumus, AoPS’s free adaptive math practice system.
Alcumus chooses problems based on how a student is doing. It spends more time where practice is needed, mixes in review, and provides a detailed solution after each problem. Even after getting a problem right, reading the solution can reveal a cleaner or more interesting approach.
It also feels more like a game than a worksheet. Students gain XP, level up, complete quests, and work toward mastery while the system adjusts the difficulty. AoPS also offers free videos and other resources when students want another explanation.
Alcumus is not a shortcut. You still have to think. That is exactly why I like it. If you use it consistently, it is a great free way to improve at math and become a stronger problem solver.
