AP Computer Science tutoring

I tutor both AP Computer Science A and AP Computer Science Principles. Lessons focus on the concepts a student is missing, a reliable way to reason through problems, and the confidence to write, read, test, and explain their own work.

AP Computer Science A

AP Computer Science A centers on programming and problem-solving in Java. I can help students strengthen the foundations behind their classwork: tracing code, variables and expressions, conditionals, loops, methods, classes and objects, arrays and collections, algorithms, testing, and debugging.

The goal is not to memorize a pattern for one question. We work on recognizing what a problem is asking, choosing a manageable approach, and checking whether the resulting code actually does what the student intended.

AP Computer Science Principles

AP Computer Science Principles covers a broader view of computing. Support may include programming and algorithms, data, computer systems and networks, abstraction, and explaining the effects of computing. Because schools may use different programming tools or languages, we can work in the environment used by the student’s class.

For Create performance task work, I can clarify course concepts and help a student interpret official requirements, but I will not write or complete submitted work for them. Academic integrity and genuine student understanding come first.

About Matt

I have taught since 2019 and currently teach math at Art of Problem Solving Academy in San Mateo, whose emphasis on deep problem-solving and conceptual understanding closely matches my own teaching philosophy. I earned a B.S. in Computer Science from UC Irvine, where I tutored the introductory Python series, and I have taught with Girls Who Code and theCoderSchool in Irvine. After studying Chinese for over six years, I created Waabl to help language learners study a new Chinese word each day.

That mix of math teaching, computer science teaching, and real software development helps me explain both the abstract reasoning and the practical habits students need.

Rates and scheduling

Lessons are live over Zoom. I discuss rates directly with families because they depend on the number of students and the frequency of sessions; recurring or multi-session arrangements may have a lower per-session rate. You will know the arrangement before committing.
